Of the 300 islands and 522 smaller islets, approximately 106 are permanently inhabited.

The largest island is Viti Levu, with the two biggest metropolitan areas – Suva, the capital city and Lautoka. The second largest island, Vanua Levu, is 64 km to the north of Viti Levu and the two main towns there are Labasa and Savusavu.

A Fiji vacation can include many types of islands. The Mamanucas near Nadi are coral islands. Taveuni consists of a line of dormant volcanoes, while Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are continental land masses.

The splendid reef systems of Fiji offer spectacular scuba diving.

The population is incredibly mixed with indigenous Melanesian Fijians in a majority. Indo-Fijians descended from Indian indentured laborers account for 40 percent. Polynesians, Chinese, and Europeans make up the rest.

Fiji's largest island Viti Levu hosts both the main international airport Nadi and the capital city Suva.
